Why 35 × 45 mm is so common

Most of the world follows the photo standard set by ICAO, the UN’s civil aviation agency, for machine-readable travel documents. The 35 × 45 mm format with the face filling 70–80% of the height is the most widespread version, used across Europe, the UK, Australia and many other countries.

The US is the main exception with its square 2 × 2 inch format. Canada uses a larger 50 × 70 mm photo, and China a slightly narrower 33 × 48 mm one.

Head size matters as much as photo size

Getting the outer dimensions right isn’t enough: the size of your head inside the photo must also fall within a range. For example, the US requires 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to the top of the hair, while the UK requires 29–34 mm from chin to crown. Two photos the same size can differ wildly in head size depending on how far the camera was.

That’s why our tool measures your face and scales the crop to place your head and eyes inside the official ranges, showing the measured values under the preview.

Digital photo requirements

More and more applications are online and want a digital file with specific pixel dimensions and file sizes:

  • US passport and visa: square JPEG, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, maximum 240 KB.
  • UK passport online: at least 600 × 750 pixels.
  • India e-Visa: square JPEG between 350 and 1000 pixels, up to 1 MB.
  • China visa online: 354 × 472 to 420 × 560 pixels, 40–120 KB.

The tool exports the digital file at the right dimensions and automatically chooses the JPEG quality that meets the file-size limit.

Printing

If you need printed photos, a single 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) print fits several copies:

  • 2 × 2 in: 6 copies
  • 35 × 45 mm: 8 copies
  • 50 × 70 mm: 4 copies

Download the print sheet, print it at 100% scale with no borders, and cut along the guides.
